Conference Summary

I have just returned from GHC. I have so much to say in regards to the conference that it might take me a few posts to get it all out. For this post, just a few highlights.

Blogger meetup. I got to meet Jane and Wicked Teacher of the West, and it was awesome! I have been reading Jane's blog for awhile, so it was great to meet the person behind the blog! Jane is every bit as impressive in real life as her blog would lead you to believe; you can see what she has to say about the conference here. I haven't read Wicked Teacher of the West's blog before, but I will certainly have to follow what this interesting woman is up to from now on!

Sessions. There were sessions about surviving grad school, grad student mental health, ABD's, etc. There was ample opportunity to meet with women I would like to be when I grow up, and talk in very frank terms about motherhood and its impact on ones life and career, and strategies to overcome obstacles. As these topics are dear to my heart, more on this later.

Networking. I didn't hand out any resumes (I am not on the job market), although I have been asked for one a few times. I got to catch up with friends I rarely see otherwise, and make many new ones. It was great to exchange thoughts, advice, and encouragement. I also got to meet a few big-shots in my sub-field, which is always quite exciting! And did I mention that I got to speak with Fran Allen, a Turing award winner?!?

Ok, back to the million things that have been ignored while I was away. Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

That session on grad student mental health sounds useful... :S

Figuring out how to fit motherhood and a career into one life is a major reason I read many of the blogs I do. I look forward to hearing more about the sessions.
