The following is an example of a conversation I keep having with various college-educated peeps (CE) in my neck of the woods.
...
CE: I just don't know about Gmail. The fact that it advertises music instruments when I am reading an email about a church orchestra recital makes me uneasy. I just hate the idea of someone else knowing what is in my email; what happened to my right to privacy?
SG: But you support the Patriot Act!*
CE: Of course I do! Did you see on the news how they are able to prosecute people for their crimes much faster and at a much higher rate thanks to all the information they collect?
SG: But this means that Big Brother is listening to your phone conversations; don't you mind that?
CE: No, we all have to give up our own share of privacy to be able to catch these terrorists.
*I am by no means trying to compare what Google does to what is done under the Patriot Act.
