Open letter to dog owners

Dear Dog Owners,

I appreciate your need for a four-legged friend. However, please pick up after your friend when he mistakes the paved path in a local park for a bathroom. Surely you know that there are other people using the park path, and some of us are not so fond of turning our runs into a game of "dodge the poop."

Love and poop shovels,
ScienceGirl

PS: And when you pick up, don't just leave the plastic bag on the side of the path, put in in the effing bin.

This is one of my major pet peeves (no pun intended). As a dog owner, I always pick up after my dog (or, once, I didn't have any bags with me and I made sure to move said poop far off the trail). It's not very hard to get one of those little bag dispenser to clip onto the leash. It makes all us dog owners look bad when one idiot cannot clean up after his/her pet.

Addendum to HGG's point: Please don't throw the bag over someone's fence into their garden, either. Especially not in winter when the contents will freeze and their nature will not be immediately obvious to the homeowner. Who might put the bag in his car with all the other garbage that ends up in his garden, with the intention of putting it in the bin at his workplace. And then find himself wondering what that smell is as his car warms up. And then have to explain the stinkiness to his wife, who will be less than impressed, but will then tell the entire blogosphere.

Thank you.

I second Amanda - as a a dog owner who always picks up after hers (except for that one time when he had to go 3 -- three! -- times in one run and I ran out bags but dirtied my own shoes kicking the offensive stuff to the side of the trail and covering it with leaves), it just drives me to distraction that other people leave their pets crap behind for other people to deal with. I also can't believe that people in my neighborhood need to erect "please curb your dog" signs on their front lawns. I cannot understand who these dog owners are who would let their dog poop on someone else' lawn and then leave it there!

@Cath - Ewwww! People pick up the poo and then put it in your yard - that's even worse. And I thought it was bad when my frat-boy-neighbor's buddies drink int he driveway and use the tailgate of my truck as their own personal drinking furniture/empty can repository. Jerks!

Amanda, what a wonderful name.. :-)

I agree with everyone so far, a few people make us all look bad. I have a German Shepherd Dog, and it doesn't matter that "your dog is so small no one will notice, not like your [referring to my GSD] dog," picking up after your dog is just part of having one in your life.. NO MATTER THE DOG's SIZE!!!

Sorry, you seem to have hit a nerve with this one, since a neighbor is having trouble understanding this and is about to bring out the bear in me!

In Hermitage's native land, no one picks up their dog's poop. Ever. At All. I still have a firm practice to examining any grassy surface I'm walking on for old or fresh poop poop. I have to say I am still somewhat amused by people's virulence about cleaning up after it in my current location. As my neighbor and owner of 3 semi-feral pitbulls would say 'a little poop never hurt nobody.'

Ok, me thinks I hit a nerve with this one!

Hypoglycemiagirl - yeah!

Amanda - sorry, I didn't mean to imply that all dog owners do this! Unfortunately, all it takes is a couple, and there is poop everywhere!

Cath - you have the craziest stories ever! Coincidence? Me thinks not ;)

AA - I truly do appreciate the responsible dog owners, I promise!

EGF - ah, melted poop! I remember what that looks like - yuk! Oh, and thanks so much for the award!

Quiet - I guess I can look at it as an agility exercise :P

ScienceBear - welcome :) If it makes you feel any better, little poop is no less annoying than big poop, and it is harder to spot in less than perfect lighting conditions. Me hopes your neighbor realizes this before the Bear comes out ;)

Hermitage - where is that Poop Land, so I can make sure to avoid it? (j/k ;)

What exactly are you implying? ;)

I am not implying anything ;) Keep the crazy stories coming, Cath! :)
