Singing geeks :)

Lyrics by Herb Sutter
Music: "We are the Champions" by Queen

I've tried Pascal*, time after time
I've done my COBOL, but committed no crime
C pointer mistakes, I've made a few
I've had my share of Lisp and Haskel and Scheme but I still haven't a Clue
(and on and on and on and on)

We are the champions, O Bjarne**!
And we'll keep compiling till the end***
You've made us champions, we are the champions
No time for Java 'cause we are the champions
Of the world!

I've taken my macros, and my function calls
I've enjoyed speed and performance and everything that goes with C, I love them all
But C's been no bed of roses, and Ada's no pleasure cruise
I want abstraction and optimization both***, so I ain't gonna use...
(and on and on and on and on)

* This and the other names in the song are names of programming languages. The one language that is not mentioned in the song but which the song is about is actually C++.
** Bjarne is one of the Gods in my field (the creator of C++), he's the one the song is being sang to in the video. The video is from a recent C++ Standards committee meeting, and I actually know some of the people, and have read a gazillion of their articles and books.
*** That includes yours truly :) I think this song will be stuck in my head for weeks; does that make me a geek?

Wonderful! It's better than the periodic table song!

Haha...very funny! But what about FORTRAN? Just because it's old doesn't mean it should be forgotten, right??? :-)

@Amanda: What's this about a periodic table song? Please share!

Amanda - I am glad to hear that my kind of geeks isn't the only singing kind ;)

MadHatter - no worries, Fortran is alive and well and not going anywhere any time soon, at least for scientific simulations :)

That was awesome!!! I love that I can understand the geekery on your blog, as opposed to stuff about biological phenomena that I don't understand :).

PD - I try to beware of the diverse audience and not post things that are too field-specific, but occasionally it is good to share the geekness that is most dear to my heart :)
