"You don't look well today"

My first reaction to a comment like that tends to be "Well, gee, thanks." Luckily, I catch myself before saying that, and remember that what may seem like an impolite comment in one culture, is simply an expression of genuine concern in other cultures, and that I got very little sleep and surely look it (the fact that I have no recollection of looking in the mirror after a shower this morning only seconds that).

Its all about the rat race...

That's one way of looking at it!

Actually, now that I think about it, I ask people ALL THE TIME, "you look tired/ill; are you okay?" How annoying (and hypocritical) of me!

My favourite is the very British "oh my god, you look how I feel".

IMO it's only ever acceptable when suffering from a hangover after a night out with the other person...

UR - it's an easy way to throw an already exhausted person into wondering if they remembered to brush their hair, etc.

Cath - I agree! No reason to tell me how obvious it is that I don't feel well.
