An office all to myself?!?

Now, that is something I can get used to. It is small, but it is all mine, and it even has a window! A huge upgrade from a noisy 3-people tiny windowless office (grad school), cubicles (internships), or hunting for a spot in a general use lab and carrying all belongings on one's back (undergrad).

No more distractions*!

*External distractions, that is. We shall see about those internal ones...

W00t for sweet office spaces! Congrats! You've earned it.

That's awesome! And a window! That is pretty sweet.

Awesome! I'm moving desks myself next week--I'll share a space, but since it will be of the lab I'll get to web-surf, er, work hard on manuscripts and drink tea the same time!

Oh, niiiiice. I'm jealous, I'm in an open plan area near the facilities manager's office. He's currently talking to an electrician on a walkie talkie, very loudly, with his door open...

I do have a decent view if I turn around though

Hermitage - thanks! I think I am going to love it!

Amanda - it is sweet, and totally unexpected!

The bean-mom - no web surfing for me (monitored usage), but I can definitely have tea ;)

Cath - I had a similar set up at one of my internships; it was very hard to concentrate on tasks like writing - how do you do it?

Nice! I currently have a huge window but am in lab space. No privacy whatsoever!
I miss my private office because I could change into running clothes and be out the door without having to stand barefoot in the bathroom/balance clothes from falling in the toilet or trek 2 miles across campus to the gym just to change.

Albatross - I hear you on the privacy! I haven't taken advantage of the ability to change in my office yet, but it is certainly nice to have that option.

Own office rocks! In Sweden I do have my own office (assprof), in UK I don't (still on postdoc level there)

HG - is it really that straight forward from your "rank"? Here it seems to depend more on how much funding/space your P.I. has, and how much importance they place on giving people offices.

Awesome! I too have my own office and it is so great. I would share, but there just happens to be space/no one to share with me. I can't understand why people think that junior folks should earn their stripes or something by sharing an office if there is enough space for them to have their own. The interruptions that come with sharing are so much less conducive to getting work done.

Congratulations! I have my own office, and last week I used it to dry off after a torrential down pour. I shut the door, took off my wet socks and pants and worked bottomless for the morning. Aaaaah. I love being able to shut the door.

That's so awesome SG! I don't have an office, but no one does - it's just a bunch of cubes. But I do have a big window. And a tree. It's nice, actually.

EGF - I am curious to see if my productivity goes up a lot because of this; so far it is hard to tell because I just started here and have a lot to deal with, but I should know once things settle down a bit.

JP - that sounds handy! Now, if someone knocked in the meanwhile, would you have pretended to not be there? ;) My office has motion sensors, so it is impossible to "forget" a light on - not sure I could trick anyone when it is not already bright outside ;)

PD - I love natural light, and am almost as excited to have a window after all these years as I am not to have officemates!

MadHatter - thanks! It is proving very nice already!
