Back in the fall, I've agreed to review for a major conference in my field. In fact, I was very excited to be asked to be a reviewer for this conference: while I have been involved in the committee for years, this is the first time I have a chance to contribute on the technical side.
Don't get me wrong: I have enjoyed working with the diversity sub-committee and the sub-committee on student competitions very much, but it has been surprisingly difficult to get a hand into the decision making about the meat of the conference, which is still by enlarge done by the white d00ds. And yet, here I am!
Now, if I can only figure out how to do said reviews with an infant in my arms...

I dunno if you noticed the demographics of the chairs of the technical committee this year, but it was a deliberate decision made by the program chair to show that getting a diverse team is as easy as falling off a log. He is made of elemental awesome, I'm telling you!!!
I know, it's amazing! I really hope I can figure out how to attend this conference to see it all in action, but travel suddenly seems daunting.
If you bring Dovie, I volunteer to watch her during some of the sessions you want to attend. Also, I submitted a Women in "Science" BoF and you both would be more than welcome there (assuming it gets accepted of course).
We are thinking about it, if we can make it work, since we both want to go, in which case you'll definitely have to meet her :) Has Vinny attended any conferences?
Let me know if the BoF gets in - would it be the first at SC?
Sadly, as far as I know it is the first of its kind at the conference :(
I am optimistic about its chances because a) it's an important topic, and b) look at the demographics of the BoF chairs ;)
Vinny has never gone to SC because he was over a year old when I went in 07 and then each year after that when Jeff came along we were able to leave Vinny with Grandpa.
