- Setting myself up for a life-time of a job where curiosity is the name of the game;
- Stumbling onto some really cool shit on a daily (ok, more like weekly or monthly) basis;
- Graduating, and, conversely, starting to make a reasonable amount of money.
#1 - I am no longer sure that this one is true; people 10 years senior of me seem to be mainly working their butts off on writing proposals, and hiring grad students and postdocs to do the actual poking around. People 5 years senior of me are either doing poking around for someone else's proposals, or trying to learn how to write their own so their ideas can be explored as well (albeit by someone else).
#2 - Is still true, but I think I may be too underslept/exhausted to fully appreciate this at the moment. (I hope both the sleep situation and my enthusiasm improve soon. Eagerly waiting, actually.)
#3 - Is no longer a carrot, but rather a stick. We find it increasingly difficult to manage on grad student salaries, and need to graduate before we dig ourselves into too deep of a financial hole.
So, currently, there appears to be no carrots, just sticks.

Boo! I hope you start to getting more sleep soon and that some rest will help things start to look a bit rosier.
It's good to hear from you, and thanks for writing for the carnival.
Hey! It's great to read you again.
Soon you will have more energy, just don't forget to post something for us your readers.
Hey, good to see you posting again!
I'm sorry you're having a motivational crisis. Maybe the fact that #3 has become a chore rather than a positive aim is clouding things... hopefully once you've graduated, you'll rediscover the awesomeness of #1 and #2!
I am sorry your carrots have calcified into pointy sticks, hopefully you find a way to reverse this tragic event! Glad to see you blogging it up again.
I hear ya! Too many sticks, not enough carrots.
Glad your back and I hope you get some some rest soon.
And, sticks suck
EGF - it is amazing how much sleep has to do with one's view on life; I know once I get a bit more of it I will be more positive. Looking forward to read the carnival you are putting together!
Carlos - thanks for stopping by! The posting is proportional to the amount of sleep I am getting ;)
Cath - thanks, I am sure things will start looking up once the financial pressure eases up!
Hermitage - thanks! Luckily uncalcification should be possible in this case :)
AA - carrots would be way lovelier than sticks!
MXX - thanks! Sticks are no fun in comparison to carrots, especially pureed ones ;)
