20 years ago

The air was thick with fear of bloody war, thirst for independence, and hope for a better life. On the brink of financial and political collapse, the U.S.S.R. was nothing short of a fierce military machine ready to gun down its own people. But the people now had a new trick, "non-violence," and a way to draw the World's eyes to what was happening. Fear of the machine and the unknown was overcome with desire to take matters into one's own hands, and a new country was born. What followed was far from simple and is far from over, but nonetheless,

My brother-in-law is in Ukraine right now, helping to reform electoral law (he's done similar work in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo, and worked on reform of the court system in Vietnam). He's absolutely loving it, and says there's such great energy and hope in the country.
