... were the first words to come out of the baby monitor this morning. Oh no, my toddler is all grown up! And, she only likes prime numbers!!!
Dovie now counts everything. Grapes - one, two, three (while grabbing grape halves from my hand). Pacifiers - one, two (while raising one hand at a time, with a pacifier in each hand). Do you want to jump? - Ooone, twoooo, twoooo haffff... (yep, starting the fractions already!). It is so fun to watch her clearly understand what she is doing rather than simply repeating it, and I do hope she enjoys math as much as her parents do. I most definitely hope she won't ever ask for "Allergic to Algebra" shirt or the likes, so if anyone has ideas on how to steer clear of that, please do share.
And in the meanwhile, here's an article at the Washington Post on women in STEM.
The perverse incentives of academia

She gets the right example from her parents. She'll be fine. Yesterday evening my 6-year old daughter asked if she could please do all her homework for the week. And please, please, math first! That's my girl!
That's awesome! I'm just now starting to hear the first hints of possible words from Monkey - it's so exciting to see them grow!!
wow how old is dovie??!! she's a toddler already?! I feel like yesterday. Which I know technically isn't possible since see was born BEFORE I was prego with BG, but still she can't be old enough to be talking and walking and OMG time goes by too fast. Glad to have you blogging again though :)
how can dovie be old enough to be a toddler? I can not believe that she is old enough to talk and count. I feel like it was only last week that she was born, which I know is not possible since she was born BEFORE I was prego with BG, but still OMG she's walking and talking and growing up so fast. Glad to have you blogging again :)
Makita - your daughter sounds eager to learn, which is exactly what we hope for ours! With any luck :)
Dr. O - yes, except they grow too fast, and their minds seem to grow exponentially!
SM - Dovie is 18 months, and into everything! It is quite fascinating.
It is so exciting when a child begins to do things like this! I hope she continues strong on the math path. That's so funny that you point out she is counting in prime numbers!
My youngest daughter is 12, and loves science (especially cell biology), but hates math. I'm not a scientist myself, but from what I can see, a career in science will be difficult without a strong math background. But I am not telling my daughter this. Rather I am going to try to encourage her on the math front. And try to get her to NOT compare herself to her older brother, who is definitely strong in math skills.
